Pforta Monastery School
Naumburg
In the year 1173 Cistercian monks founded the monastery `St. Marien zur Pforte`near Naumburg at the north shore of the river Saale. It soon became one of the richest monasteries in East Thuringia. The Cistercian monks were successful in cultivating the landscape – they drained the marsh, built an embankment against the flood and the weir in Bad Kösen, used the river Kleine Saale as an artificial watercourse and improved the wine and fruit growing. The end of the monastery came at the time of the reformation in the 16th century. In 1543 monastery Pforte became Schulpforte because the Duke and later Elector Moritz von Sachsen used the former monastery buildings as one of three special national educational establishments. 150 gifted boys should get an excellent education in order to become teachers, scientists, civil servants or Protestant clergymen. The selection of the students was not depending on social background but just on results. The boys got six years of education, accomodation, food and so on free of charge. Generations of students, among them such popular ones as Ranke, Fichte, Nietzsche and Klopstock, don`t only show the success of this project but also the wisdom of the Duke who invested in the education of the youth. Till 1815 the educational establishment was Saxon, then it was under Prussian rule because of the resolution of the congress in Wien and was very famous during the 19th century. From 1935 to 1945 it was a nationalistic educational establishment, at the times of the GDR it became an `Erweiterte Oberschule` (grammar school). But it always kept the claim to results. Since 1990 the Landesschule Pforta is again a boarding grammar school, representative of the school is Sachsen-Anhalt. Around 400 girls and boys study here up from the 9th class with focus on languages, music or natural sciences and live in the boarding school looked after by the teachers.
