Lake Geiseltalsee

Sailing boat Uno on the Geiseltalsee

An exciting open-cast mining history has made the Geiseltalsee in Saale-Unstrut in the south of Saxony-Anhalt what it is today. What has remained after the open-cast mining is the picturesque landscape around the lake, pampering culinary delights with vineyards that produce high-yield grapes, and villages that tell this impressive story for you.

Holiday at the Geiseltalsee

Whether for just one day or for a whole holiday: The Geiseltalsee will enrich you with variety, provide cooling on hot summer days and offer you the perfect backdrop for active sports in nature. I will show you what the Geiseltalsee has in store for you.

Lake Hostage Valley facts

The largest artificial lake in Germany, which is located in the south of Saxony-Anhalt, covers an area of 18.4 km². As remnants from the times of lignite mining, remaining holes, which had been created by the mining of lignite, were converted into the Geiseltalsee after the end of open-cast mining operations in the 90s. Over the years, the lake received a gradual inflow from the Saale river, until in spring 2011 it finally reached the highest level at which it still stands today: almost 100 metres above sea level.
Directly at the lake are the places Braunsbedra, Mücheln and Bad Lauchstädt in the Geiseltal, where the source of the lake is located. Both places offer you culinary delights, sights that will introduce you to the history of the region and industrial culture.

Accommodations at the Geiseltalsee

If you are still looking for the right accommodation for your stay at the Geiseltalsee in Saale-Unstrut, there is a wide range of possibilities: No matter if you prefer to stay in your own camper in Hostage Valley Lake Camp would like to stay overnight, treat yourself to a few days of relaxation with a view of the lake in a houseboat or stay in one of the holiday apartments, houses or guesthouses - the right accommodation will definitely be there for you.
Of course, you are especially close to the lake on one of the houseboats. Here, too, you will be spoilt for choice, as the boats range from the luxury class, to boats with huge terraces for long evenings at sunset, to small and simply furnished houseboats. If you would like to enjoy foreign cuisine, you should choose the "Warias - Hotel & Restaurant" in Braunsbedra, the Drei Linden" Inn & Pension in Branderoda or the "Kurpark Hotel" in the Goethe town of Bad Lauchstädt, because here you will be served breakfast directly after a restful night, while you can cater for yourself in the holiday homes.

Sights and activities

The Geiseltalsee offers you a varied program with activities for a holiday including many impressions. Directly at the lake you can for example enjoy the picturesque view from three different observation towers, which are all over 14 meters high.

View at the Geiseltalsee:

  • observation tower Seeblick Klobikauer height: 14,5 m
  • Leonhardt observation tower in Braunsbedra: 14,43 m
  • Pauline lookout tower in Mücheln: 15 m

In the south of the lake near Mücheln and Braunsbedra you will also find boat landing stages: The Marina Mücheln and the harbour Braunsbedra as well as the famous pier are the perfect place to just relax a little bit, watch the boats bobbing in the water and enjoy the view of the Geiseltalsee. There, one feels beamed straight to the south of Europe. If you have your four-legged friends with you or want to do some sports, there is a dog beach and the possibility for diving and water sports. But not only in the lake you can be sporty: Hiking on the Hostage Trail or even on the Way of St. James from Mücheln, grab a bike and explore the picturesque landscape around the Geiseltalsee, discover industrial culture here and there and dive into the history of lignite - there is probably no better way to spend a holiday at the lake in terms of sport.

Of course, the Geiseltalsee itself provides refreshment on hot days: You can either change into your bathing outfit or use the local nudist beach for a nudist holiday. If you prefer to see the lake from the air, you should definitely take a Hot air balloon ride at the Geiseltalsee. Get an overview of the south of Saxony-Anhalt and have a look at the most beautiful corners, which you can explore on the ground again afterwards. Not only in the water or from the air you can experience the lake: At a Excursion boat trip from the Marina Mücheln you can let a pleasant breeze blow around your nose and enjoy the view of the water.

Navigation on the Geiseltalsee:

  • Departure: Apr.-Oct. Sa & Sun 14 hrs
  • Duration: 1 hour

If you are more interested in the culture of the Saale-Unstrut region, I recommend you to get to the bottom of history in Mücheln. There you can, for example, look at fossils from millions of years of history or get to know a piece of history of brown coal mining in the mining museum. For some relaxation you should take a walk through the baroque garden Mücheln or a stroll directly at the moated castle. The scenery is wonderful and the perfect spot for some nice holiday photos.

Trip to Merseburg

Also an excursion to the Cathedral city Merseburg is very rewarding. In just 20 minutes by car or uncomplicatedly by train you are in the historical city in the Leipzig area and can enjoy the enchanting Merseburg Castle marvel at the art, stroll along the Saale or be inspired by the art in the city's galleries and museums.

Experience the Merseburg Castle Festival
Throughout the year there are many great events in Merseburg, such as the Merseburg Organ Days, the Merseburg Castle Festival and the SchlossGrabenNächte in summer and the Merseburg Castle Christmas in the pre-Christmas period. If you are in Merseburg during this period, then you should not miss it!

Culinary delights around the Geiseltalsee

What would a holiday or an eventful day trip be without the right delicacies?
"From mining to viticulture" is the history of the region at the Geiseltalsee and so you can enjoy culinary delights during your visit to the lake at the vineyard.
There are numerous places for a culinary delight in Braunsbedra directly at the Geiseltalsee, but also in Merseburg. If you want to treat yourself after a day of sightseeing in Merseburg, I recommend the panorama restaurant Rabennest: With an open fire and elegant furnishings you can enjoy German and international cuisine. For dessert or just in between on hot days you should find your way to the ice cream parlour Fresco Gelato, because here you can get the best ice cream of the region. In the restaurant Zur Schiene you will be spoiled like family members at "Eisenbahnromantik" with schnitzel, salads and pasta - the perfect place for a meal with your own family! Pier 5 - Café & Restaurant in Mücheln is located directly at the lake and offers you a wonderful view of the Geiseltalsee during dinner.

Recreation at the Geiseltalsee

You do not always have to travel far to find beautiful places. If you are from the east of Germany, you have the Geiseltalsee right in front of your door. But even from far away it is worth the journey as you can see, because the lake in Saxony-Anhalt could not be more diverse. Let's go!
