Luther and Zeitz

Follow the traces of Martin Luther and his descendants in Zeitz and discover the "secret" Lutherstadt.

Dr. Martin Luther visited the city of Zeitz several times and preached, for example, in the Franciscan monastery and also in the Michaeliskirche.1542 he introduced the first Protestant bishop of Germany, Nikolaus von Amsdorf, to his office in the Elsterstadt. From 1587 and until today descendants of the Reformer lived in Zeitz. Johann Ernst Luther, a grandson of the Reformator, was married in the Michaeliskirche. His gravestone is embedded in the wall of the cloister at the cathedral St. Peter and Paul in Zeitz. From 1726 to 1742 Dr. Friedrich Martin Luther, a great-grandson of Luther, was "first mayor". In 1882 an original print of Luther's theses from 1517 was discovered in the library of St. Michael's Church - there are only 6 copies of such poster prints in the world. This rarity can be viewed in today's church café. The Lutheride Library, an extensive collection of valuable books and documents that Luther's descendants collected and kept in their ranks, can be found in the gate house of Moritzburg Castle.
