Did you know that Zeitz is a Luther place?
Â
Follow the traces of Martin Luther and his descendants in Zeitz and discover the "secret" Lutherstadt.
Dr Martin Luther visited the town several times Zeitz In 1542, he introduced Germany's first Protestant bishop, Nikolaus von Amsdorf, to his office in the Elsterstadt. Furthermore, descendants of the reformer lived in Zeitz from 1587 until today. Johann Ernst Luther, a grandson of the reformer, was married in St Michael's Church. His gravestone is engraved in the wall of the cloister at the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul in Zeitz. From 1726 to 1742, Dr Friedrich Martin Luther, a great-grandson of Luther, was "first mayor". In 1882, one discovered in the library of the St. Michael's Church an original print of the Luther Theses from 1517 - there are only 6 copies of such poster prints in the world. This rarity can be viewed in today's church café. The Lutheride Library, an extensive collection of valuable books and documents gathered by Luther's descendants and preserved in their ranks, can be found in the gatehouse of Moritzburg Castle.
