Naumburg Cathedral and its treasures

Founder figures Uta and Ekkehard in Naumburg Cathedral (c) Vereinigte Domstifter, M. Rutkowski

The Naumburg Cathedral, one of the most important cultural monuments of the European High Middle Ages, is always worth a visit together with its cathedral treasure.

Visit the visitor magnet on the "Romanesque Road"! A must is certainly the early gothic west choir with its twelve founder figures, especially the founder figure Uta - THE symbol for the "most beautiful woman of the Middle Ages".

Great works of art in Cathedral and cathedral treasury you must not miss! The Romanesque crucifix in the crypt, the early Gothic Westlettner with its lifelike figures and plants, the graceful Mary Magdalene by Lucas Cranach the Elder in the cathedral treasury or the stained glass windows designed by Neo Rauch in the Elisabeth Chapel will delight you as a visitor. The idyllic cathedral garden, on the other hand, will lure you out behind the west choir to escape the hustle and bustle for a while.

Before you drive on, stroll into the pedestrian zone and have a drink in one of the nice cafés or restaurants.
After your culinary break, we recommend a trip to the Merseburg CathedralIt is about 35 minutes away from Naumburg. There you will not only find the most beautiful sounding romantic Ladegast organ, which you can listen to from May to October in the series "Orgelklang 12", but also the Heinrichsaltar created by Lucas Cranach the Elder. You will be impressed by the cathedral treasure, which you can reach through the romantically situated cloister.

It is also worth making a detour to the Neumarktkirche with its Knotensäule, the only one of its kind in Central Germany.
