The almost 1000 year old city is also called the "City of Three Towers".

Historically of great importance is the battle of Milzin (Hohenmölsen) in 1080.

As so often in German history, the princes stood against the central power of the king or emperor. This fate was also shared by King Henry IV. The disputes between King Henry IV and the Pope and some princes culminated in the appointment of Rudolf of Rheinfelden, also known as Rudolf of Swabia, as counter-king by Swabian and Saxon dukes.

After several battles, the two armies marched on 15 October 1080 at Hohenmölsen in the swamps of the Grunau. Rudolf and his followers finally won. In the battle Rudolf received a deep wound in his abdomen and his right hand was cut off in the battle. When he was dying he is said to have said: "See this is the hand with which I swore allegiance to my king". In the course of time, the cut off hand went down in history as the "oath hand". However, King Henry IV was still able to decide the war for himself, even though he had lost the battle.

Hohenmölsen was first documented in 1091 under the name Burgward Milzin. During the 30-year war Hohenmölsen fell victim to the flames, except for one house. The development of mining in 1855 attracted many workers to the town. At present, about 9100 inhabitants live in the unitary community of Hohenmölsen.
