At 88 years old, the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra is very big
The Jena Philharmonic Orchestra in the Volkshaus Jena is not only the largest cultural institution in its city, but also the largest concert orchestra in Thuringia. The Jena Philharmonic Orchestra has a long tradition: its success story began in 1934, when it was still known as the Jena Municipal Symphony Orchestra. It quickly became part of the cultural life of the region.
Today, the musicians play over 100 concerts a year in Jena and on national and international tours. Invitations to give guest performances take the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra throughout Germany and to many other countries in Europe; in winter 2018/2019, as far away as China. In addition to the major symphony concerts, the orchestra is also distinguished by its chamber music activities, which enrich the concert programme of the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra.
So much music in the heart - that's the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra
There is much more to the Jena Philharmonic than "just" the orchestra, in which more than 80 musicians share their passion and unite it in a wonderful sound. Three choirs also belong to the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra and make it something unique. Through the Philharmonic Choir, the Madrigal Circle and the Boys' Choir, choral symphonic music is also an important part of the orchestra's work.
Music education is a major concern of the musicians, which is why they also perform in schools and kindergartens in the city of Jena and the surrounding districts, for example.
The active promotion of aspiring professional musicians is also close to the heart of the Jena Philharmonic. Together with the Theater Altenburg Gera, it launched an orchestra academy in 2018, which is financed by the Free State of Thuringia. The special and great thing about it is that the scholarship holders of the orchestra academy receive dual training: They gain experience not only with a concert orchestra but also with an opera orchestra, which is of enormous importance for their musical careers.
The Sound of Jena
The Jena Philharmonic likes to experiment with thematically designed concert series and the inclusion of different musical genres. One of many innovative ideas is the format "The Sound of Jena". With this, the Philharmonic looks beyond the confines of classical music and concert settings and creates space for encounters. Different players from culture, art, education and science are brought together in this way. A field of experimentation was created that should not stop after one event but continue to develop - as a process of exchange between the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra, the city of Jena and the audience.
