Saale-Unstrut - we are coming

07 September 2020, Mira Held

The gentle green hills gradually change into steep slopes covered with wine. Flo and I look out of the window of the regional train and are amazed how the landscape has changed within a few kilometres. Our way is short and yet it feels like going on holiday.
We visit the Saale-Unstrut area, which is only about an hour away from Erfurt, half in Thuringia, half in Saxony-Anhalt.

Saale-Unstrut wine region is just around the corner

Of course we became aware of the region because of the wine. Saale-Unstrut is the northernmost quality wine growing area in Germany and therefore it is a must for us connoisseurs to finally stop by here. During our three-day visit to the region, we will of course not only taste the variety of wines, but also get to know the culture and landscape.

Besides a discovery tour through our starting point Naumburg we have planned 5 excursions around the cathedral city:

5 Tips for excursions in Saale-Unstrut

Excursion no. 1: Goat farm Schleckweda

Over 80 goats, 2 friendly farm owners, 17 varieties of the finest goat cheese: The goat farm in Schleckweda has a lot to offer. You should definitely try the aromatic mite cheese, in which mites help the ripening process.

Excursion no. 2: Rotkäppchen sparkling wine cellar

Little Red Riding Hood sparkling wine everyone knows, but the fact that it is bottled in Freyburg in the Saale-Unstrut area is probably not so well known. During a guided tour through the champagne cellar we visit the gigantic cuvée barrel and open a fine bottle with a saber.

Excursion no. 3: Zahn winery

In the family-run Zahn Winery we can enjoy a guided tour of the vineyard. On 15 hectares a variety of white and red wines are grown here. 35 different wines are produced here. Because of this variety you can taste it best in the vinotheque or in the attached restaurant. With a view of the Saale and fine food on your plate, it really feels like Tuscany.

Excursion no. 4: Burgenlandschmiede

Isn't it much too complicated to forge your own knife? Luke's carnation breaker mediates in his Burgenlandschmiede all the way from iron to kitchen knife. Either to try it out for yourself, for your own kitchen or as a noble souvenir for your gourmet friends.

Excursion no. 5: Looking at vineyard cottages

It is quite amazing what is to be found on the steep slopes of the Saale and Unstrut. Between the vines, picturesque wine cottages of every colour stand, which take on numerous forms from small castles to barracks. The little houses can be discovered wonderfully during a bicycle tour or a hiking tour. Be sure to make stops to taste the wine!

Yes, and then there is Naumburg. A cute little town with narrow medieval streets and colourful town houses along wide boulevards. One enchanting colourful front door follows the next and we definitely don't have enough time to stroll through all the cute little streets.

Instead we visit the impressive Cathedralwhich is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site and enjoy a small organ concert on the famous Hildebrandt organ in the Town church of St. Wenceslas. Summer free of charge on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 12 noon. Highly recommended!

Culinary we can offer you the food in the Guesthouse Zufriedenheit in which we also stay overnight. Here you can find seasonal and regional cuisine of great quality and we feast ourselves with the great selection on the small menu. Of course with a glass of wine from Saale-Unstrut in your hand.

How nice that it is no exaggeration and Saale-Unstrut is actually only a stone's throw away and we will soon be
can come back.
