Whether palm house or herb garden, cacti or carnivorous plants - there is something to discover here in every season!
For plant lovers and nature lovers the botanical garden in Jena is a must! Where else can you find such an attractive oasis so close to the city centre? Around 10,000 plant species grow on the 4.5 hectare area. Jena's botanical garden is the second oldest in Germany. Founded in 1586 as a medicinal herb garden, it owes its current layout to the contribution of Goethe. The famous poet and natural scientist is commemorated by a ginko tree that is over 200 years old and whose leaves glow bright yellow in autumn. Alpinum, tropical plants, useful and medicinal plants, every subject area of the Jena Botanical Garden has its own charm. In the Victoria House, which was built especially for the famous Amazon water lily, the colourful butterflies flying around inspire children and adults alike. All year round, exhibitions and events attract interested visitors. Highlights such as the Easter egg hunt or the plant rarity exchange in June are real crowd pullers. A visit is worthwhile at any time of year!
