With its sculptures and reliefs, Plastik-Park Leuna is a unique testimony to the visual arts of the 1950s and 1960s in the GDR. It is the only major green space of great importance for the garden city of Leuna and is a pioneering project for the maintenance and development of urban open spaces.
The park at the edge of the Gartenstadt settlement, on the western high bank of the Saale, is also the starting point for walks along the river and into the floodplain lowlands of the eastern bank of the Saale. The Saale cycle path runs below the park.

Garden City Leuna

With the settlement of the Badische Anilin- und Soda-Fabrik (BASF) in 1916 and the construction of the ammonia plant south of Merseburg, housing was needed for thousands of workers in this agricultural area. Commissioned to plan the settlement and inspired by the English garden city movement, the architect Wilhelm Karl Willy August Barth (* 1877 in Wiesbaden † 1951 in Leuna) planned the Neu-Rössen works housing estate as a garden city. The result was a successful coexistence of industry, working, living, housing, nature and culture.

In 1996 Leuna was included in the nationwide programme for the "Promotion of urban redevelopment and development measures". The result of 20 years of urban redevelopment is something to be proud of: a green, liveable and lovable town, which today is the largest area monument in the Saalekreis district and a listed building.
