Description:

Gradierwerk Bad Kösen exists since 1779/80.

The "trickling down" of the brine over blackthorn brushwood leads to the evaporation of water and the deposition of sparingly soluble salts on the thorn walls. This results in a higher percentage of brine being obtained. The Bad Kösen graduation house is an industrial building of the 18th century and, like all graduation houses, was used for salt production by graduating the brine. After the salt extraction was stopped

After salt extraction was stopped, the remaining graduation houses were largely used for medical purposes. Based on the knowledge of the healing and soothing effect of the brine, bathing developed into an economic sector not to be underestimated in many places around the turn of the century in our immediate vicinity, even if only some of the bathing resorts established at that time have been able to maintain spa operations to this day. The Bad Kösen graduation house is about 320 m long, 18-20 m high and is located on the Rechenberg, a shell limestone rock in a north-south direction. The plant was built around 1780 as part of the Kösener Saline by the master builder Schröter according to the Senff's method of construction. In 1809, the graduation house was extended by K.A. Henschel. During the spa season, the gallery is accessible and is used for open-air inhalation. On some Sundays of the year, guided tours are offered on the upper deck of the graduation house. The fact that the entire saltworks complex with water wheel, artificial rods, brine shaft and graduation works has been preserved as a coherent complex to this day makes it unique in Europe.
