The hike begins in the town centre/railway station of the small winegrowing town of Freyburg. Along the edge of the forest you enjoy the view of the Schweigenberg, the terraced vineyards and vineyard cottages. High above the Unstrut valley you can see the monastery church of Zscheiplitz.
It continues over meadows and through a deciduous forest, the view from above is reminiscent of an amphitheatre.
The sky is a fairy-tale blue and "milan flown over" - this is how the Rödel plateau presents itself with its species-rich flora. Koniks were introduced to preserve the dry grassland and prevent it from becoming overgrown.
In the past, shell limestone was extracted from numerous quarries on the Rödel. Some of these old quarries are still open and visible, others have been reclaimed by nature. A sunken path leads through forest and orchard to the village of Nißmitz.
Walk back to Freyburg via the Unstrut meadows with a view of Neuenburg Castle and the ducal vineyard.

In Freyburg it is worth visiting the Neuenburg Castle with its Romanesque double chapel, the Rotkäppchen sparkling wine cellar. The Freyburg Winegrowers' Association with one of the largest wooden barrel cellars in Germany and, last but not least, the Jahn Museum are also interesting destinations.
The long-distance trail Feengrotten-Kyffhäuser-Weg, the panoramic trail Haineberg, the Neuenburg-Rundweg are further worthwhile circular trails.
An important hint for orientation: At the Schützenplatz in Freyburg there is a hiking and information board with all hiking trails in the surrounding area.
The numerous restaurants in Freyburg, e.g. the Hotel Unstruttal, the Weinhotel Freylich Zahn, the Hotel Zur Sonnenuhr and the Hotel Rebschule, as well as the Weinberghotel Edelacker, all offer refreshments.
