A varied hike over meadows, through forests, magnificent views and coniks.

The hike begins in the town centre/train station of the winegrowing town of Freyburg. You walk along the edge of the forest with a view of the Schweigenberg with its terraced vineyards and idyllic vineyard cottages. High above the Unstrut valley, in an exposed position, you can see the monastery church of Zscheiplitz.
Over a beautiful meadow the trail climbs uphill and continues through a deciduous forest. Up at the edge of the forest - with a wide view of the Unstrut valley and Neuchâtel Castle - you feel as if you were in an amphitheatre. A few steps further - no less spectacular - the view into the valley towards Nißmitz.
The sky is fairytale blue and "overflown by milan", that's how the Rödel plateau presents itself with its rich flora. Koniks were settled to preserve the dry grassland and to prevent scrub encroachment.
The little wild horses are the "attraction" on the Rödel. Curiously they take a close look at everything and are, long since used to the hikers, very trusting.

Shell limestone was formerly extracted from the Rödel in numerous quarries. Some of these old quarries are still open and visible, others have long since been reclaimed by nature. On the viewing platform you say goodbye to the Rödel plateau. A beautiful sunken path leads first through the forest and later through an old fruit plantation to the small village of Nißmitz. Over the Unstrut meadows with a view of Neuchâtel Castle and the ducal vineyard you hike back to Freyburg.
