The former Clarissan convent was built in 1301 at its present location, and after the introduction of the Reformation, the convent was converted into a women's convent in 1540.
During the time of the Duke of Weißenfels, Duke August von Sachsen-Weißenfels founded the "Gymnasium Illustre Augusteum" in 1664, where the nobility and future civil servants of the state were educated.
