Novalis was not only a well-known writer of the early Romantic period, but also a trained geologist. At the end of 1797, he began to study mining sciences in Freiberg, Saxony. Together with his teacher, the geologist and mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner, he conducted a geological survey of Saxony in search of new minerals and fuels. During his explorations and developments of the region, he succeeded in mapping new lignite fields.
The presentation highlights Novalis in his professional capacity as a geologist. Geological objects from the museum's collection will be assembled. In addition, a brief look is taken at the use and extraction of coal at that time.
