Photo exhibition: Pictures of Frida Kahlo were recreated by Bert Loewenherz.
The Berlin photographer Bert Loewenherz has realised an elaborate exhibition project that focuses on the self-portraits of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.
The photographer describes his first encounter with Frida's visual world as "an inspiring mixture of total shock and fascination. I was suddenly obsessed with the idea of creating a photographic interpretation of Frida's self-portraits and I wanted to get as close to her as possible."
After several months of preparation and the search for a congenial Frida actress, he worked out solutions with a team of make-up artists, stylists and assistants to translate the surreal, coded and symbolic layers of her painting into photography.
All the clothes and accessories used, including the gynaecological instruments, are originals from the 1920s and 1930s.
The art exhibition presents selected works in the form of large-format prints and individual Tehuana costumes and kimonos used in the photo shoot.
