The band KARAT was founded in 1975 and gave from the beginning 100 % their
artistic mastery and quickly became a jewel of the
German-language pop and rock music landscape.
The reward for this, in addition to the lasting fan enthusiasm, were numerous
'sparkling' awards, including quite a lot of gold. Already in 1983
KARAT for their groundbreaking album "Der blaue Planet" (1982
published) in the then Federal Republic of Germany their first

Album Charts. Only one year later followed gold number 2 for their next
stroke of genius, the masterpiece "Albatross", published in 1979.

musicians make clear. Already in their founding phase, the first concert
took place in Pirna, Saxony, KARAT was considered an all star formation of the
GDR music scene.
The three ex-members of the jazz-rock band that rose to great fame
Formation PANTA RHEI, bassist HENNING PROTZMANN, singer HERBERT
DREILICH as well as the classically trained and brilliant pianist, keyboarder
and composer ULRICH 'ED' SWILLMS took the old band name from
of ancient Greek philosophy for the new project called KARAT

rock ballads with elements of classical music, influences from
the heritage of the classical German Lied, then again songs in the
so called prog rock style with the distinctive bass runs and blues
Harmonica...No other band at the time is so diverse in their
arrangements and sounds, paired with this at that time also novel
lyrical to poetic language in the texts, in nuances also mystical,
philosophical and political.
KARAT made their claim clear from the beginning, with meanwhile
numerous even to modern folk songs, pop evergreens and classics
of the German rock hit... "King of the World", "Albatross",
"Thundershower," "Swan King," "Every Hour," "Flowers of Ice," "The
blue planet" and of course their Über-Hit "Über sieben Brücken musst Du
geh'n", which PETER MAFFAY made into the biggest east-west hit in the
in what was then still a divided Germany.
