your holiday

Experience the variety! In the Wethau Valley you will find idyllic cycling and hiking trails, delicious local fare (regional products), and of course numerous destinations that are well worth visiting.

A paradise for cyclists and walkers
The Wethau Valley – the idyllic stretch of land from Heideland, via the Molauer Platte, to the place where the Wethau flows into the Saale at Schönburg – is ideal for discovery tours. Whether you are on foot or on a bike, when you go on excursions here you are sure to get your money’s worth as you explore and admire the wealth of options for tourists. Several sections of the “Rad-Acht”, which links the Saale, Unstrut and Elster cycle trails, lead through the Wethau Valley.

Take a tour here and enjoy the charming landscapes: explore the new cycle trail between Zeitz and Camburg (via Weickselsdorf, Osterfeld, Cauerwitz and Schkölen), which runs along the former track of the now disused “sugar railway” and is ideal for families due to its uniform incline.

Or take a good close look at the old windmills along the Wethau. The Mühlenradweg windmill cycle trail will take you from Osterfeld through Löbitz and then further along the stream through Mertendorf until it flows into the River Saale shortly before Schönburg.

Delicious local fare – regional products from the Wethau Valley
Giving consumers an opportunity to trace the origins of goods and find out about the production methods and processes – this is the intention of the producers in the Wethau Valley, who sell a wealth of different products via short, direct routes.

Tasty, fresh and homemade products, and not least the special atmosphere during the shopping experience, are becoming more and more appreciated. So on your tour of the Wethau Valley why not visit the Grüner Hof in Löbitz, “Kathrins Hofladen in Oberkaka, the “Alte Bäckerei” in Schönburg or Bäckerei Schlegel in Waldau?

Interesting places to visit in the member municipalities

Gieckau – A village that is very popular, mainly because of Reiterhof Gieckau, a stable with both indoor and outdoor riding areas. Whether you opt for a ride in the surrounding area or on the stable’s terrain, after your ride it is well worth stopping for a bite to eat in the beautiful renovated country restaurant in the village.

Osterfeld – This town was first documented in 1198 and has numerous impressive attractions, one of which is the castle grounds situated high above the town. There was a Slavic hill fort here as long ago as the 6th century, and in the 11th and 12th centuries the fortress was substantially extended. The enclosing walls and the remains of the castle walls are still preserved in the adjoining copse.

Schönburg – 40 metres above the River Saale on a sandstone cliff towers the castle which gave the town below this medieval structure its name: Schönburg. The 32-metre-high keep with its attractive fireplace in the tower chamber and the guardroom at the top of the tower are particularly worth seeing. The foot of the Schönburg is the ideal starting point for excursions to the castle and the surrounding area, because a boat mooring point, a campsite, and cycling and hiking trails around the Schönburg all meet up here.

Sieglitz – This little place awaits visitors with several attractions at once, including a smock windmill which produced flour until well into the 1950s, and “Heinos Raritätenkabinett”, a museum displaying numerous nostalgic exhibits from times long forgotten.
