Cathedrals, churches & monasteries
From the place of death of King Henry and Emperor Otto the Great in Memleben, where today there is a museum in the medieval monastery, it is not far to pay a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Naumburg Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul. Early Baroque religious architecture is on offer in the residential towns of Merseburg, Weißenfels and Zeitz.
Overview
Did you know that Saxony-Anhalt has the highest density of cultural assets in Germany that are on the UNESCO World Heritage List? Two of them come from Saale-Unstrut! In addition to the Nebra Sky Disk, which is part of the World Document Heritage Site and is now kept in the Museum of Prehistory of Saxony-Anhalt in Halle (Saale), Naumburg Cathedral is also on the UNESCO World Heritage List. But also other important cathedrals & churches, like the city church St. Marien in Freyburg from the 12th and 13th century can be found in the cultural region Saale-Unstrut.
Inspiration
Even more special features about the cathedrals & churches in Saale-Unstrut can be found in Naumburg also in the late gothic, protestant church St. Wenceslas. None other than Johann Sebastian Bach himself inspected the baroque organ system in 1746! The church organ is thus one of the only Bach organs in the world that has been preserved in its original form.
