Kleines Lützen - Great history

On 9 June 1269 the town (Civitas) of Lützen (Lucin) was first mentioned in a document. Lucin means as much as people who live in the Wiesengrund. Already in 1291 a court seat is mentioned in Lützen.

In its over 700-year history, plague and conflagrations have raged several times. However, the most important event that made Lützen famous was the battle of the same name in the Thirty Years' War. On 6th/16th November 1632 the troops of Albrecht von Wallenstein (Catholics) and Gustav II Adolf (Protestants) faced each other at the gates of Lützen. After the 6-hour battle, 9000 people died, among them the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf. The exhibition in the castle museum and the Gustav Adolf Memorial commemorate this event. Since 2006 the battlefield of 1632 has been under archaeological investigation. Many thousands of finds have already been recovered, some of which, which can be attributed to the battle, are exhibited in the museum.

Not only because of its history a visit to Lützen is worthwhile. Especially the atmosphere of the city centre and the extensive grounds of the Martzschpark with animal enclosures invite you to take a walk.
