The collection of the German Optical Museum is world class. In order to explain optical phenomena in a comprehensible way in the future and to present important exhibits in an attractive way, the museum is being rebuilt since July 2019. With the reopening, which is planned for 2023, Jena will have an impressive "showcase of optical research". The objects will be shown in their context, the basics of optics will be explained in a playful way and the latest research results will be presented in a way that is easy to understand. Those who find this too technical can enjoy the aesthetics of the objects. Glasses of famous personalities are on display in the museum, for example by Rudolf Virchow, Robert Koch and Helmut Kohl. There are also magnificent microscopes, jewellery telescopes, smoky quartz spectacles and diamond-studded lorgnettes to admire. The versatile collection offers interesting topics for every visitor. A visit with the whole family is also possible. Interactive exhibits with a high learning effect inspire adults, students and children for optics. The Carl Zeiss workshop will be shown in its original context as a typical optician's workshop of that time.
