Memories of and by Marlene Dietrich

Marlene - icon of film history, vamp and diva: it is always the same legends that are associated with the name Marlene Dietrich, ever since she set out from Berlin as a blonde Venus to conquer the world like a comet after her triumph as the dashing Lola in the film "The Blue Angel" in the early 1930s. This actress was more contradictory, modern and uncompromising than any other Hollywood star. But what made this woman so extraordinary is only revealed when she is seen in her own time.
Marlene Dietrich put on trousers when women got a beating for it on the open street. She brought her child to Hollywood when motherhood meant the end of an erotic film star. She resisted Hitler's enticements when many of her colleagues were falling over. And she began a second career as a disseuse at an age when others were retiring from the stage forever.
With her reading, Claudia Michelsen presents the life of a woman who systematically eluded capture throughout her life and still poses riddles: How could she, whose lovers were named Erich Maria Remarque, Gary Cooper, Jean Gabin, John F. Kennedy and Yul Brynner, call herself not beautiful? After all, she had achieved world fame with her overpowering erotic aura. Why did she doubt her acting abilities? And how was it that this idolised diva complained of loneliness all her life? In the books of her memoirs, Marlene Dietrich has answered these and other questions to give an unsparing account of her eventful life.
